Learning and working on safety at Alcomij

At Alcomij, we believe it’s important to give new talent the opportunity to learn in practice. A great example of this is Quinten (29), who works with us as a safety specialist in training.

Quinten is studying Integral Safety Science at The Hague University of Applied Sciences and is in the final year of his dual work-study programme. He works at Alcomij four days a week and attends school one day a week. “For me, this is the ideal combination,” he says. “I can apply what I learn directly on the work floor.”

Working safely, every day

Within Alcomij, Quinten is involved in safety in the broadest sense of the word. This includes machine safety, fire safety, emergency response (BHV) and the correct use of personal protective equipment. He also carries out risk assessments and works on improvements to make the workplace even safer.
“The most important thing to me is that everyone can go home healthy and safe at the end of the workday,” says Quinten.

Learning in practice

What makes this work-study programme especially valuable is that Quinten is in close contact with colleagues from different departments. This gives him a good understanding of daily activities and potential risks. He also uses this practical experience for his graduation project, which is fully focused on actually improving safety within Alcomij.

Good guidance and room to grow

Quinten experiences Alcomij as a pleasant employer where guidance is taken seriously. “From my very first day, I felt welcome. I am given the space to ask questions, contribute ideas and take responsibility. That really supports my development.”

Tips for future work-study students

His advice to future work-study students is clear: take initiative. “Don’t be afraid to ask questions and share ideas. If you’re motivated, there are plenty of opportunities at Alcomij.”

With work-study programmes like this, Alcomij invests in the future: in people, development and a safe working environment.
