Sustainable greenhouse structures and greenhouse roof systems since 1969

The world population is growing rapidly. It is expected to increase by 25% over the next thirty years. At the same time, clean drinking water and fertile agricultural land are becoming increasingly scarce. These developments are putting pressure on the global food supply. Traditional open cultivation offers less and less continuity, efficiency and quality. The demand for locally produced, safe food is increasing – and with it the need for sustainable cultivation solutions.

Greenhouse horticulture offers a concrete answer to this. The controlled environment of greenhouses enables efficient and continuous food production, with minimal waste and maximum yield. New forms of cultivation such as vertical farming and urban farming also contribute locally. The Netherlands – and the Westland region in particular – plays a key role in this and is one of the largest food exporters in the world.

2002 – Acquisition of Boskon

Alcomij acquired the greenhouse construction division of competitor BOSKON to strengthen its position in the market.

2006 – Acquisition of Alcoa Agro

With the acquisition of Alcoa Agro, Alcomij expanded its portfolio with new roof systems and gable solutions.

2012 – Acquisition of Alkupro

Through the acquisition of Alkupro, Alcomij added the greenhouse roof system of the same name to its product portfolio.

2015 – New headquarters

Alcomij relocated to a modern company building on Hagemanstraat in ’s-Gravenzande.

2018 – Production facility upgrade

With the automation of aluminum and steel production, Alcomij’s manufacturing facility was fully modernized.

2024 – Demolition and construction of new production site

As Alcomij’s old production halls reached the end of their lifecycle, they are being replaced by a modern and sustainable facility.

Hordijk: From craftsmanship to innovative greenhouse solutions

Since its foundation, Hordijk has grown from a local carpentry business into a reliable supplier for the horticultural sector. In 1922, Hordijk started producing wooden crates for the vegetable auction in Berkel. Close cooperation with farmers and growers led to a specialization in greenhouse structures and customized greenhouse components. As early as the 1960s, Hordijk supplied the first steel units and aluminum greenhouse systems, making an important contribution to the modernization of Dutch greenhouse horticulture.

From greenhouse construction to innovative packaging

In the 1970s, the establishment of the Aluminium Constructie Maatschappij – in collaboration with greenhouse builder Voskamp & Vrijland – resulted in a further expansion of the product range. Today, Hordijk is a modern family-owned company with more than 400 employees, specializing in thermoformed packaging, Airpop® packaging and insulation products, injection-molded packaging, bottle blowing, steel greenhouse structures, aluminum greenhouse systems and logistical cultivation solutions. Thanks to decades of experience and a strong focus on quality and innovation, Hordijk ranks among the top of the Dutch manufacturing industry for the greenhouse horticulture sector.

Voskamp & Vrijland

What started as NV Aannemersbedrijf Boers & Vrijland grew from 1949 onwards into a leading greenhouse builder. Under the name Voskamp & Vrijland, the company constructed more than 1,450 hectares of greenhouses between 1963 and 1983 – accounting for almost one-third of the Dutch greenhouse area. In addition to greenhouse structures, the company also produced boilers and heating systems for horticulture. Thanks to this broad expertise, Voskamp & Vrijland was recognized for decades as a driving force in the development of modern greenhouse technology in the Netherlands and far beyond.

International success and uncertain times for Westland’s largest greenhouse builder

With a strong focus on continuity, quality, and social responsibility – including staff facilities, local sponsorships, and international projects – Voskamp & Vrijland also built around 905 hectares of greenhouses in countries such as France, England, Romania, and Bulgaria. Despite this impressive track record, a combination of barter trade and a shrinking market led in 1985 to the bankruptcy of what was then the largest greenhouse builder in the Westland region.

Alcomij

What began as a joint venture between Hordijk and Voskamp & Vrijland grew over the course of fifty years into a leading manufacturer of aluminum greenhouse systems and steel greenhouse structures. Alcomij was founded in 1969, precisely at the time when aluminum extrusion profiles became available on an industrial scale for greenhouse horticulture. Combining Hordijk’s expertise in machining with Voskamp & Vrijland’s international experience in greenhouse construction created a powerful synergy that firmly positioned Alcomij in the market.

Alcomij continues to grow as a reliable partner for international greenhouse construction

After the bankruptcy of Voskamp & Vrijland, Alcomij became a wholly owned subsidiary of Hordijk. Thanks to continuous modernization and a strong focus on quality, Alcomij has grown into a trusted partner for greenhouse builders worldwide. Today, Alcomij operates advanced machinery for steel and aluminum processing and, in addition to greenhouse roof systems, also supplies logistical cultivation solutions such as auction trolleys and grow tables. Flexibility, innovation, and precision have been at the core of our production and services for decades.
